CHAPTER SEVEN

Magic Isn’t Just for the Witching Hour

There was a reason forbidden magic wasn’t Vega’s first choice. There were consequences if she were caught. Namely execution.

Vega lifted her chin, examining her rival’s expression. “If I am able to heal your daughter so that she is well enough for travel, what will convince you to allow her to go to the school? If I assure you that I can heal her, will that be enough?”

Mrs. O’Shaughnessy crossed her arms and looked away.

Vega considered what Baba would have suggested in a circumstance such as this. If there was one expert at knowing the differences between kinds of black magic and the nuances for which kind was most appropriate to use in any given situation, it was her grandmother. Usually Baba required someone’s fingers or toes to fuel the blood magic or pain magic of her spells. Vega was better at blood magic than pain magic, but both were challenging. All kinds of forbidden magic were risky to use. The consequence would be the same, even if Vega used it for the purposes of good, not evil. And once Vega resorted to using any form of forbidden magic, it would be more difficult for the school nurse to use normal healing spells on Fabienne. At least until the blood magic had a chance to fade.

It was safer if Vega resorted to a slightly less forbidden form of taboo magic—fueling her own with someone else’s. At least that wouldn’t result in her execution if she were caught. Though that was still easier to perform if she had something that belonged to that person, hair or blood. No matter what, Vega didn’t know if she could pull off using forbidden magic secretly.

“What would you give for your daughter’s health?” Vega asked. “Are you willing to pay a tithe?”

Mrs. O’Shaughnessy stiffened. “Do you mean, will I let her go with you?”

Vega hadn’t said that was what she wanted, but it was a logical assumption to make since it was what she’d been trying to convince the overprotective mother to do. Mrs. O’Shaughnessy stubbornly held her ground, her eyes blazing with anger.

Vega could see she wasn’t going to budge. She sighed in exasperation. “I need a sacrifice. Something to amplify my magic.”

Mrs. O’Shaughnessy flinched back, horror crossing her face. “Are you asking if I’ll cut off my fingers for my daughter’s health?”

Vega arched an eyebrow at her. “Is that how your brother lost his fingers? It was a sacrifice for a witch’s spell?”

Mrs. O’Shaughnessy didn’t meet her eye. “So I’m told. My mother lost four of her toes that way as well.”

Lovelie and Mirlande exchanged surprised glances. They were probably learning more about their family than they ever had before today.

“I don’t need your fingers or toes,” Vega said. “I just need magic. And it would be easier to use clean magic than the errant magic that’s already here.”

“I don’t have magic,” Mrs. O’Shaughnessy said firmly.

“Not that you know of.” Vega suspected Mrs. O’Shaughnessy wasn’t going to have much after a life being exposed to cold iron, plastic, and electricity.
